Perfect Pour Over Method

As you may know, Dave has been drinking coffee primarily via this pour over method for years, using the “Perfect Coffee Maker." Other coffee brewing fads have come and gone, but this one has stood the test of time. In fact, here at the plant we brew quite a few pots this way every day to share with our staff and anyone who walks through the door. This method is perfect for making 6 cups of coffee, will stay hot for hours in the thermal carafe, and is easy to adjust the amount of grounds to get the perfect drinkable strength.

You will need:
  • Dave’s perfect Coffee Maker system which includes
    • Melitta #6 cone filters
    • Plastic pour over cone
    • Zojirushi "Handy Pot" Thermal Carafe
    • coffee
  • 1-liter hot water (our favorite kettle is the $20 Hamilton Beach Electric Kettle, available at Costco)
  • We use ½ cup of beans or grounds per liter of water

Instructions:
  1. The beans should be ground very fine to maximize flavor and yield per pound – almost as fine as an espresso grind, just one step above (on the Baratza grinders, this is in the 8-10 range).
  2. Pour the grounds in the filter and place in the cone. Place cone over the thermal carafe.
  3. Pour hot water to about 2/3 full and wait about 15 seconds to let the grounds infuse, then quickly top off. At this step do not be afraid to fill the water all the way to the very brim of the filter!
  4. Let drain completely (can take roughly 3 minutes) and enjoy!
